About the exhibition

Corley, Fitzgibbon, and Stankiewicz expand on the notion of recurrent and recurrence. Corley draws inspiration for her paintings and sculptures from her scuba diving experiences and underwater sea life. Fitzgibbon works more directly with electrical currents creating mesmerizing LED assemblages. Stankiewicz explores the charge of memory imbued in physical objects and environments.

About the Artist

Denise

Corely

Tortured Artist Statement—a whole bunch of words that may resonate with my work.

Organic, curved, space, grids, crude, gritty, raw, primal, imperfect, skewed, torqued, screen, veil, mysterious, fe-male, waves, water, current, revolving, mesmerizing, tactile, intimate, revealing, unconscious, conjuring, religious, scientific, baffling, sacred, sexual, colorful, sharp, recycled, reused, illusions, circles, shapes, lines, assemblage, collage, abstract, dimensional, graphic, metaphoric, seeking, lively. Making art for me is like going up to the attic of your accumulated knowledge and experience and rummaging around, dusting off bits of your visual thoughts and reworking them. My work, my process is something of an improvisational interaction between myself and my materials and the results can be found in the words above. I let myself experiment which means fail. Working through failure is sort of like gold mining; there is an accumulation of slag until you find the vein. And the truth is the slag is the work and the gold.

Tom

Fitzgibbon

Tom Fitzgibbon has no artist statement because he is not an artist. He has not formally studied art history or the process of art. He is a poseur, a rapscallion, a scullery maid attempting to break into the art world, afraid that he will be found out at any moment. In the meantime he works with paint, wood, steel, LEDs, lasers, bulbs of various types and computers to make odd light based works. He loves Bill Jensen, Tinguely, Cornell, Burchfield, Sonnier, Corbet, Goya and Velázquez (who doesn't).

According to Mr. Fitzgibbon: "I just want to whittle duck decoys in the back".
