What happens when a painting is made outdoors and then left behind? Join Laura Sue King in the gallery for a conversation about Painting Outside, Outside Painting: how she chooses a site, what a place and its former occupants ask of her, and why the camera became part of the work. King will walk through the three series on view, from the East Village sidewalks of the early 2000s to the Catskills woods this past year, and talk about how a practice built on improvisation and weather fits alongside her studio painting and printmaking. Drawing on her years teaching Color Theory at Hunter College, she’ll also get into the question that runs through all of it: how color behaves differently in the open than it does on a studio wall.
