The East Branch Delaware River Plein Air Painters have gathered each week for the past 10 years to draw and paint the hills and valleys of Delaware County. In a tradition begun by the Impressionists, plein air painters work quickly to capture the shifting play of light as it moves across the landscape. ArtUp is pleased to present this collection of their work
Join the East Branch Delaware River Plein Air Painters for an immersive afternoon of art at the ArtUp Gallery. You're invited to bring your own materials and engage in plein air painting, sketching, or drawing. Share your work with fellow artists and experience the beauty of the outdoors through art. As a special treat, all participants will receive one fresh apple.
This is a free event open to all skill levels—come create, connect, and enjoy the creative process.
In 2011, Alix Travis, a watercolorist living in the town of Halcottsville in New York State’s Delaware County, along with fellow artists, participated in a fund-raising event for the East Branch Public Library. The library set the theme of “Scenic Route 30.” For a number of weeks, individually or in small groups, we painted Tuesday mornings all along 30. Later, this informal group continued with the same schedule, meeting at different spots, public and private, painting for a few hours, then reviewing our individual efforts with appreciative, supportive criticisms. We brought our lunches.
When Alix moved in 2016, the task of finding suitable venues fell to Michele Sidrane and Kathleen Green. The number of painters grew. As the seasons came and went - usually May through October- participants joined and left, all levels of experience were welcomed. Our painting skills improved, the mysteries of interpreting our Catskill landscape slowly revealed themselves, and friendships were formed.
For many painters - myself included - the observation, interpretation, and decision making involved in creating an image is primarily a solitary pursuit. The Tuesday morning group outings provide an opportunity to visit places I otherwise would not go and the informal exchange with other painters provides a degree of encouragement that all creative endeavors need. We all grow.
